NEWS on the WHARF, Canary Wharf’s specialist newsagents, has become the latest tenant to support the Breaking The Plastic Habit programme. The retailer, with five outlets across the Estate, has become a reward partner for the Deposit Return Vending Machine, generously committing to offering rewards to visitors who use the unit in Canada Place. For every plastic bottle or can recycled, users will receive a 10p discount on any soft drink which can be redeemed at any NEWS on the WHARF outlet

The Deposit Return Vending Machine was launched in April 2018 in partnership with Reverse Vending, and was the first publicly accessible recycling machine in the UK. Positioned in Canada Place, the machine allows the thousands of people who come to Canary Wharf every day to recycle their single-use plastic bottles and cans in a simple, easy and efficient way. The automated machine uses an innovative 360-degree scanning recognition system to identify, segregate, collect and process waste drink containers, creating a resource that would otherwise likely be incinerated or sent to landfill.

Breaking The Plastic Habit aims to reduce avoidable single-use plastics throughout Canary Wharf, with multiple initiatives proving hugely successful, such as the water refill stations, #3Weeks campaign and launch of the HELPFUL app. However, it is recognised that it is equally important to ensure that any plastic that is used, is recycled correctly and as efficiently as possible.

As part of the Breaking The Plastic Habit programme, last year saw a partnership established with one of the Estate’s organic juice and coffee bars, who supported by offering rewards for every one of their own bottles recycled by the machine. Now, with NEWS on the WHARF’s commitment, it means that every plastic bottle or can recycled will see a reward voucher issued, further incentivising a positive behaviour change and therefore potentially increasing recycling rates even further.
